Competency-based Education

The traditional education system is based on moving students through school and a curriculum regardless of whether they learned it. Competency-based education (CBE), however, is about redesigning schools so that instruction is personalized and education is student-centric.

NC New Schools is working with state and national stakeholders to consider implications of expanding competency-based education on capacity, policy and resources.

CBE is about elevating the teaching profession since it provides opportunities for enhanced professional learning around curriculum design, assessments and grading.

In order to implement CBE with fidelity, NC New Schools will bring stakeholders to develop a shared vision and understanding, conduct extensive research on expanding competency-based education and support educators with extensive professional learning opportunities.
